AWS Marketplace Drops Professional-Services Fee for Bundled Solutions

AWS Marketplace now charges a 0 percent listing fee for professional services purchased as part of a qualifying multi-product solution, in a September 1 update to its seller fee structure. A solution qualifies only when the services are packaged with at least one other valid, paid subscription. The rate applies to new subscriptions across all commercial AWS Regions where AWS Marketplace operates, and existing subscriptions keep their original terms. Professional services sold on their own are unaffected and stay on the separate 0.5 percent listing fee that AWS describes as a recent reduction. AWS says the change further lowers the cost for any partner that transacts services through AWS Marketplace while retaining the billing benefits, and points sellers to AWS Partner Central to list qualifying solutions.

Our take: The spread between this rate and the standalone 0.5 percent fee is 50 basis points, which is not why anyone routes a services engagement through a marketplace in the first place. The draw has always been that the purchase can count against what the customer already committed to spend with AWS, and what AWS is buying with a small amount of forgone fee revenue is packaging behavior: services attached to a subscription line rather than sold on their own. Services-led firms with no product to attach to get nothing from this and now sit on the wrong side of a price difference they cannot close. The AI-assisted partner discovery riding along in the same announcement deserves the usual treatment, which is to believe it once a partner can name a deal that came out of it.
